How to get your impounded car back
To get an impounded car released, you’ll need a minimum of 30 days’ specialist insurance cover. A one-day insurance policy won’t be enough.
It’s also worth noting that many standard policies don’t cover releasing from an impound. If you need insurance that does, Policy Link can provide you with an affordable quote from one of their partners.
Reclaiming an impounded vehicle
To release an impounded vehicle, you will need to provide documentation to prove ownership and that the car is road legal. The exact requirements may vary depending on where your vehicle is held so always check with the compound. You may be required to show:
Proof of insurance
A valid certificate of insurance. This can be either an electronic copy on your phone or an email or fax sent directly from your insurer. Keep in mind that some insurance policies may not be valid for reclaiming a seized vehicle.

Proof of identity
You will need to prove you are who you say you are. A valid photo ID is required such as your driving licence or passport. A student or employer ID won’t be accepted.
Proof of ownership
You will need to prove that you are the registered owner of the vehicle. This can be satisfied with the full vehicle registration document (V5C) and matching proof of address.
Proof of valid MOT
If your vehicle is more than three years old you will need to do one of the following:
- Show a valid MOT test pass certificate
- Provide evidence of a pre-booked MOT
- Arrange for recovery at your own expense
How long do you have to reclaim a seized vehicle?
It’s important to act quickly as you will likely be charged a fee for every day your vehicle is impounded on-top of the overall release fee. If after 14 days you fail to reclaim your vehicle or show satisfactory documentation it may be crushed.
What if I’m not the registered keeper?
The official registered keeper of the vehicle will usually have to attend in person to prove ownership and pay the charges. The only exceptions to this are if you can prove you are out of the country or have a compelling medical or compassionate circumstance that stops you being able to personally be present. After visiting the compound to establish ownership in person, you may nominate someone to retrieve the vehicle on your behalf.
Why can a vehicle be seized?
The police have the power to seize a vehicle if it’s:
- Being used in a way that causes alarm, harassment or distress such as careless or inconsiderate driving
- Being driven by someone who doesn’t have a proper licence or insurance
- Dangerously, illegally or obstructively parked
- Broken-down or abandoned
